Thursday and Saturday mornings at John Mitchel Place

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council runs the Variety Market every Thursday and Saturday, 8.30am to 1.30pm, all year. The hall and the yard outside take up to about 70 traders (BT34 2BP).

Stalls sell fruit and vegetables, fish, baking and sweets, clothes and shoes, toys, crafts, jewellery, rugs, furniture, antiques and household goods.

Turning up to trade with the Market Clerk

There is no advance booking. Come on a Thursday or Saturday morning and speak to the Market Clerk, Noel Pepper, on 07968 250742, or phone the council's facilities team on 0330 137 4031.

Stalls cost from £29 a day for a covered stall and £25 for an outside pitch, with no extra charge for electricity. No trader's licence is needed, but you must hold insurance.

The council has been looking for new stallholders since 2024, after a slow fall in income from the hall. New traders with fresh food or crafts are welcome to come and ask.

Halloween and Christmas in the market hall

Around 31 October the council has filled the hall with a Halloween Twilight Market in the evening, with local makers, food and music.

From the lights switch-on Thursday in late November until just before Christmas, the Newry Christmas Market fills the hall from Thursday to Sunday. Room Angelz Events runs it, and stalls are booked through newrychristmasmarket.com, not the council.

Warrenpoint park and the council's artisan markets

The Warrenpoint Artisan Market meets in Municipal Park on the fourth Saturday of the month, 11am to 3pm, about 15 minutes from Newry. Local food producers, bakers, artists and makers trade by the bandstand.

To trade, you must be based in the district or within 30 miles, and sell handmade, original, local goods. Applications open once a year and are closed now; phone 0330 137 4020.

Jonesborough's Sunday fair and Crossmaglen's Fridays

Jonesborough, near the border about 15 minutes south, has long been known for its Sunday market. The tourism board still calls it one of Ulster's liveliest open markets; we could not confirm its size or hours, so check locally.

Crossmaglen's traditional fairs have been listed for the first and third Friday of the month in Cardinal O'Fiaich Square, with crafts and country produce.

Buses, trains and the market town's three market houses

Newry station is on the Belfast to Dublin line, about two miles from the centre. The Goldline X1 and 238 stop at Newry Buscentre on The Mall, about five minutes' walk from the hall. The Buttercrane and The Quays have large car parks nearby.

Newry's charter dates from 1613. The first market house was built between 1703 and 1737 near Market Street, and the covered hall at John Mitchel Place dates from the 1870s.
