Spring and Christmas in the City Hall gardens
Market Place Europe runs both City Hall markets for the council. The International Spring Market brings about 70 traders from many countries to the gardens for five days, Thursday to Monday, in late May.
The Belfast Christmas Market usually opens in mid-November, on the day of the lights switch-on, and runs to 22 December. In August 2026 the Irish News reported plans for extra Christmas stalls at Custom House Square, outside the City Hall grounds; check before you go.
In late November, the Christmas Twilight Market fills St George's for two evenings, from about 4pm to 10pm, with more than 120 local traders.
Sunday afternoons in Writers' Square, Banana Block and Belfast Castle
Urban Events runs the Cathedral Quarter Sunday Market in Writers' Square, by St Anne's Cathedral, from 12 noon to 5pm on summer Sundays. Dates change each year, so check the council's events page.
In east Belfast, the East Block Bazaar opens at Banana Block, 310 Newtownards Road, on the last Sunday of the month, 12 noon to 4pm. Makers, growers and vintage sellers come, entry costs nothing and dogs are welcome.
Belfast Castle on the Antrim Road holds artisan markets on autumn weekends, from 11am to 4pm.
Getting a pitch at St George's, or a licence for your own market
Email the council markets team for a St George's application form. It takes applications for the goods the market needs; lately that means butchers, fruit and vegetables, organic food, cheese, baking, spices, jams and sauces.
A new Belfast business that has had council business support, has traded under two years and has no shop can test trade at St George's six times for nothing.
Running your own market or car boot sale anywhere in Belfast, even indoors or on private land, needs a council market licence. A single market of under 20 stalls costs £160 from April 2026. Allow up to four months.
Car boots and markets within half an hour
Nutts Corner Sunday Market, on the Moira Road near Crumlin, is about 25 minutes west. It has hundreds of stalls and car boot pitches; listings give 7am to 4pm.
Carrickfergus has a Thursday market at Joymount, about 25 minutes north-east. Bangor's Wednesday market sets up at Castle Square, and Comber's farmers' market runs on the first Thursday of the month in the Square.
Four hundred years of Belfast market rights
James I granted Belfast the right to hold markets in the early 1600s, and those rights now belong to the city council. That is why every market in the city needs a council licence.
The council built St George's between 1890 and 1896 and reopened it in 1999 after restoration.
