Friday fish, Saturday food, Sunday antiques

Each day is its own market. Friday is the variety market: fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, cakes and buns, books, antiques, clothes, crafts and hot food.

Saturday is the City Food and Craft Market, with meat, fish, cheese, coffee beans, tapas and organic produce beside pottery, glass, metalwork, flowers and plants. Local musicians play on the stage.

Sunday is the craft and antiques market: local art and crafts, jewellery, candles, recycled goods, garden plants, spices, chutneys and chocolate.

Opening times and the quiet hour on May Street

In the quiet hour the music goes off and other noise is turned down. Come early on Friday for the best choice of fish; late morning on Saturday is the busiest time.

How a stall in the Victorian hall is given out

The council's Markets team picks every regular trader. Call 028 9043 5704 and ask for an application form. Right now the team is asking for food traders for the weekend: butchers, fruit and vegetables, organic food, cheese, bakery (vegan too), spices, jams, chutneys and sauces.

The stall fee is set by the council and is not posted online, so ask for the current rate. Musicians and street entertainers can also apply for weekend slots on the same number.

A Belfast business under two years old, with no shop of its own and support from a council business programme, can have six test-trading days at no charge. Fill in the expression of interest form on the council's test-trading page.

Two November evenings: the Christmas Twilight Market

The council's Christmas Twilight Market fills the hall on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 November 2026, 4pm to 10pm, with over 100 local traders. From 9pm it is adults only.

Sonic Events ran the 2025 trader call for the council, with forms due in early October. That year a stall for both nights cost £230 for food and craft and £370 for hot food and drink, plus electricity.

Watch the council's events page in late summer for the next trader call.

Lanyon Place, the Glider and the £5 parking code

Lanyon Place station is about five minutes away on foot, and Laganside Buscentre on Oxford Street is next door. Glider G1 and G2 stop on May Street.

There is no market car park. At APCOA Lanyon Place, up to four hours costs £5 from Friday to Sunday: use the APCOA Connect app with location code 9362, or pre-book with code SGM5.

Dogs on leads are welcome, with water bowls at the May Street entrance. Toilets, including one accessible toilet with baby changing, are on the Verner Street side by the market office.

Belfast's market hall since 1896

Belfast Corporation built the red-brick hall between 1890 and 1896. Traders and shoppers saved it from closure in the 1990s, and it reopened in 1999 after repairs. It has won Best Large Indoor Market from the National Association of British Market Authorities more than once.
