Shopping inside the walls on any day

Society Street Indoor Market, at 5 Society Street inside the walls, has more than 25 small units and is listed as open seven days a week, 10am to 5.30pm.

The Craft Village, entered from Shipquay Street, has craft shops round a rebuilt square. For a Sunday car boot, drive 15 minutes east to the Vale Centre at Greysteel.

Guildhall Square on festival days

On 17 March the council's St Patrick's Day Spring Market sets up in Guildhall Square from noon, with food, coffee, toys and crafts.

During Derry Halloween, in the last days of October, the Heart of Samhain area in Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place has market stalls, food and a music stage, usually from noon into the evening. Late June brings riverfront markets at the Foyle Maritime Festival.

Christmas at the Guildhall: craft fair, then a market in the square

The Guildhall Craft Fair opens the council's Christmas programme over a Friday to Sunday in mid-November, from 10am. Everything is handmade in Ireland, with artisan food alongside.

In early December, Market Place Europe runs a two-day Derry Christmas Market in Guildhall Square, 11am to 7pm. Smaller Christmas fairs follow in halls, hotels and community centres across the city.

Guildhall Square is a few minutes' walk from Foyle Street bus station. On festival nights roads close and city car parks fill early, so the Drumahoe Park and Ride or the train is easier.

Joining the council's Trader Select List

Sign up on the council's markets page to hear about calls for traders at its festival markets. Businesses registered in Derry and Strabane come first where products overlap.

Food sellers need a hygiene rating of 4 or more, ideally with produce from within 50 miles of the Guildhall. Crafts must be handmade with no political messages, and single-use plastics are not allowed. Some events charge a service fee.

To sell alone in a street, ask the council's licensing team at 98 Strand Road. Allow three weeks for a temporary licence of up to seven days, and eight weeks for a new one.

Sunday car boot at the Vale Centre, Greysteel

The Vale Centre on Clooney Road, Greysteel (BT47 3GE), about 15 minutes east on the A2, holds a car boot sale on Sunday mornings. Listings give buyers from early morning and a small entry charge; phone 028 7181 2253 before a long trip.

From the Diamond to Guildhall Square

The planned walled city of 1613 had its market in the Diamond, where four streets meet. Trade later moved down Shipquay Street towards the river and Guildhall Square.

The council used to run the Walled City Market in Guildhall Square on the first Saturday of the month. Budget cuts ended it, and the last one was held in April 2023.
