Saturday stalls on William Street and James Street

The weekly market is a general market of local traders, set up in the centre of the road with shoppers and traffic passing on either side. Mid Ulster District Council looks after the town centre where it trades.

The council does not publish set hours. Stalls trade from the morning into the afternoon, so come before lunch for the full choice, or phone 03000 132 132 to check.

Asking Mid Ulster Council for a Saturday pitch

There is no online form. Phone the council or call at its office on Burn Road (BT80 8DT), weekdays 9am to 5pm, and ask whether a regular or a casual pitch is free and what it costs.

Trading on your own in a Mid Ulster street needs the council's licence: £215 a year for a fixed or mobile pitch, or £58 for a temporary one. You can hold five temporary licences a year.

Have ready an AccessNI basic check, gas and electrical safety certificates for any equipment, and proof of food registration if you sell food.

The International Spring Market on William Street

The council brings the International Spring Market, once called the Continental Market, to William Street over a Saturday and Sunday in May. It opens 10am to 8pm on Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.

Traders come from across Europe and beyond, with street food, crafts and music. William Street closes from Friday evening to Sunday night, so park in the Loy Street, Orritor Street or Burn Road car parks.

Craft fairs at the Burnavon and Springhill

The Burnavon arts centre on Burn Road holds its Winter Craft and Food Fair on the Saturday of the lights switch-on weekend in late November, 10am to 5pm, with no charge to get in. For a stand, phone 028 8676 9949.

Springhill, the National Trust house at 20 Springhill Road, Moneymore, holds a Vintage Flea Market and Autumn Book Fair on a mid-September Saturday, 11am to 5pm, during Heritage Open Days. Phone signal is weak there, so bring cash.

Church and hall fairs fill November, such as Cookstown Baptist Church on Burn Road and the Orange Hall on Fairhill Road.

Market days a short drive from Cookstown

A street laid out for a market

Charles I granted Alan Cooke the right to hold a market here in 1628. In 1734 the Stewarts of Killymoon planned the new town along one street about 135 feet wide, which is why the stalls fit down its middle today.
